Chief Deputy Barry C. Virts Meets with Supporters To discuss Wayne County Sheriff Candidacy
Barry Virts has officially announced his candidacy for Sheriff of Wayne County and his pursuit to win the Republican and Conservative parties’ endorsement. Virts, a 31 year veteran of the Sheriff’s Department and Chief Deputy, seeks the office currently held by Sheriff Richard Pisciotti who will be retiring at the end of 2009. Surrounded by over 140 family, friends, community leaders and colleagues at a “kick off” gathering on Saturday, January 31st Virts pledged, “I will work tirelessly on behalf of all Wayne County residents to continue to provide a professional, progressive, efficient and effective public safety department for Wayne County.”
Virts has an exemplary record in law enforcement including road patrol experience, criminal investigation and corrections expertise. Currently, he is Chief Deputy, in charge of the administration of the Wayne County Jail where he oversees over 2000 inmates a year, directs all operations and programs, manages over 100 Corrections Officers, civilian employees and volunteers while operating a budget of more than $7,000,000. Additionally, Jim Hurley, former Sheriff of Wayne County, spoke of Virts’ leadership ability in fighting crime and drugs which has been very effective.
Virts also has extensive experience serving on many community non-for-profit agency boards which give him a hands-on understanding of the needs of individuals and the value of cooperation. Virts has the endorsement of Sheriff Pisciotti, who says, “We will need an experienced, knowledgeable person to lead the department and keep our communities safe. With our economy in a difficult position we need a person who can take over this position without any new learning curve of on the job training. Barry Virts has the necessary ability to lead the Sheriff’s office.”
In the coming months, Virts will meet with Town Republican Committees to seek their support at the May Republican caucus. Virts is confident that his proven abilities and extensive experiences will convince them that he is the right person to be the Republican candidate on the November ballot. Virts says, “I would like to thank many colleagues in the law enforcement community for their friendship and guidance over the years. Together we have helped make Wayne County a safer community. Now, with capability, commitment and enthusiasm, I am ready to serve the residents of Wayne County as their Sheriff.” Virts also mentioned his community focus, accessibility and newly launched website.
